The building was initially erected during the 1830s, by the MacNeil family, relatives of Montgomery, who was born near the homestead. Interest in the Green Gables property grew in the decades after Montgomery published her novels, resulting in Green Gables' purchase by the [[government of Canada]] in 1936. Green Gables is situated on the L.M. Montgomery's Cavendish National Historic Site of Canada, a large property that also includes Montgomery's homestead, greenspaces that served as inspiration for Montgomery's novel, and several trails including ''Haunted Woods'', ''Lovers' Lane'', and ''Balsam Hollow''.<ref name=histplace1/> The larger property was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada on 12 October 2004.<ref name=histplace1/> The property itself is situated within Prince Edward Island National Park.<ref name=govpe/><ref name=gammel/>

The National Historic Site is largely divided into two areas, Montgomery's home and Green Gables.<ref name=histplace1/> The former served as the home for the author of ''Anne of Green Gables'' and consists of the ruins of her home and other farm buildings from the late-19th century.<ref name=histplace1/> Green Gables is situated to the west of Montgomery's home; with the lands surrounding Green Gables also including a historic schoolhouse, farm buildings, and trails.<ref name=histplace1/> In 2019, an interpretive centre built north of Green Gables was opened to the public, and houses exhibitions on Montgomery and her novels, particularly ''Anne of Green Gables''.<ref name=canarch/> Designed by Root Architecture, the centre includes exhibition spaces, gift shop, and offices. Green Gables is a {{frac|1|1|2}}-storey L-shaped home clad in white-painted shingles throughout; with the only other colour present on the building being the green-[[gable]]d rooftop and its window shutters.<ref name=histplace2/> The green gable and shutters were painted onto the building shortly after the federal government purchased it in 1936, in an effort to make the building more "suitable," for its opening.<ref name=gammel/> There are six windows on the two floors of the building, each with shutters.<ref name=govpe/> The {{convert|2400|sqft|m2|order=flip|adj=mid|-building}} includes five bedrooms, a dining room, sewing room, and a parlour.<ref name=torstar/> Although wood is used throughout the home, the building's chimneys are made of brick.<ref name=govpe/>

There were a total of 70 episodes during its five-season run; the fifth season was shown commercial-free on the CBC. The series was created by Ian Weir, who also served as executive producer along with Michael Chechik. The 30-minute show delved into the lives of students at McKinley High School. The plots contained romance, intrigue, jealousy, and all the other elements associated with the adolescent and secondary school scene. The series also explored various social issues, such as racism and [[homosexuality]].

The first season's plot centres on the relationship, and subsequent breakup, of Jen and Mark. Mark begins to pursue Laurel, and they begin a relationship in the second season. The relationship is rocky due to the very different goals of the two. Mark and Laurel eventually break off the relationship but attempt to remain friends.

There are also many subplots, such as Anika's manipulation of her classmates and friends, Craig's various well-intentioned but ill-fated social projects, Shannon's sexuality crisis, the divorce of Mark, Travis, and Kat's parents, and the rise and fall of Chris's popularity. Many social issues, such as prejudice, divorce, sexuality, and teen pregnancy, are dealt with during the run of the series.
