Hinsdale County is one of the most remote counties in Colorado and the United States. As of the [[census]] of 2000, there were 790 people, 359 households, and 246 families living in the county. The [[population density]] was {{convert|0.7|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|people |people}}. There were 1,304 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1.2|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units |units|}}. The racial makeup of the county was 97.34% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 1.52% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.25% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.38% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 359 households, out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.2 and the average family size was 2.6.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 19.5% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 34.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 105.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 109.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $37,279, and the median income for a family was $42,159. Males had a median income of $26,210 versus $23,750 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the county was $22,360. About 4.5% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including none of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.

==Politics==
Republican presidential nominees have carried Hinsdale County since [[Franklin Delano Roosevelt]] defeated [[Alf Landon]] by eight votes in 1936. Along with [[Elbert County, Colorado|Elbert County]] and [[Washington County, Colorado|Washington County]] it was one of three Colorado counties to vote for [[Barry Goldwater]] over [[Lyndon Johnson]] in 1964. In 2020, Joe Biden received the highest vote share for a Democrat since Johnson, and became the third Democrat since 1940 to breach 40% of the vote.

As of the [[2020 United States census]], there were 399,125 people, 158,000 households, and 93,080 families residing in the county.

As of the [[2000 United States census]],<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=January 31, 2008|title=U.S. Census website}}</ref> there were 361,474 people, 147,942 households, and 95,718 families residing in the county. The population density was {{convert|469|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 161,135 housing units at an average density of {{convert|209|/mi2|/km2}}. The racial makeup of the county was 63.96% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 31.87% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.39% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 1.25% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.04% [[Race (United States Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.09% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.40% from two or more races. 2.44% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 147,942 households, out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.90% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 15.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% were non-families. 30.00% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.20% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $38,120, and the median income for a family was $46,523. Males had a median income of $33,131 versus $25,943 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the county was $21,466. About 10.40% of families and 13.30% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 19.90% of those under age 18 and 9.80% of those age 65 or over.

The county government is a constitutional body granted specific powers by the [[Constitution of Arkansas]] and the [[Arkansas Code]]. The quorum court is the legislative branch of the county government and controls all spending and revenue collection. Representatives are called justices of the peace and are elected from county districts every even-numbered year. The number of districts in a county vary from nine to fifteen, and district boundaries are drawn by the county election commission. The Pulaski County Quorum Court has fifteen members. Presiding over quorum court meetings is the county judge, who serves as the chief executive officer of the county. Pulaski County is one of the most Democratic counties in Arkansas and the Southern United States. Pulaski County has followed in the footsteps of most urban counties across the country, especially in the era of [[Barack Obama]]'s presidency and post-presidency that has seen urban areas turn bluer and rural areas, such as most of Arkansas, to become even redder and more conservative. [[Donald Trump]], the two-time winner of the state with over 60% of the vote, only garnered about 38% in this county, among his worst performances in this state. [[Joe Biden]]'s 59.98% share in 2020 is the highest for a Democrat in the county since 1976, besting even Arkansas native [[Bill Clinton]] in both 1992 and 1996.

The bulk of the population, nearly two million, live in the roughly 480 square miles south of the San Bernardino Mountains adjacent to Riverside and in the [[San Bernardino Valley]] in the southwestern portion of the county. About 390,000 residents live just north of the San Bernardino Mountains, in and around the roughly 280 square-mile area that includes the [[Victor Valley]]. Roughly another 100,000 people live scattered across the rest of the sprawling county.

The [[Mojave National Preserve]] covers some of the eastern desert, especially between [[Interstate 15 in California|Interstate 15]] and [[Interstate 40 in California|Interstate 40]]. The desert portion also includes the cities of [[Needles, California|Needles]] next to the [[Colorado River]] and [[Barstow, California|Barstow]] at the junction of [[Interstate 15 in California|Interstate 15]] and [[Interstate 40 in California|Interstate 40]]. [[Trona, San Bernardino County, California|Trona]] is at the northwestern part of the county, west of [[Death Valley National Park|Death Valley]]. This national park, mostly within [[Inyo County, California|Inyo County]], also has a small portion of land within San Bernardino County. The largest metropolitan area in the [[Mojave Desert]] part of the county is the [[Victor Valley]], with the incorporated localities of [[Adelanto, California|Adelanto]], [[Apple Valley, California|Apple Valley]], [[Hesperia, California|Hesperia]], and [[Victorville, California|Victorville]]. Further south, a portion of [[Joshua Tree National Park]] overlaps the county near the High Desert area, in the vicinity of [[Twentynine Palms, California|Twentynine Palms]]. The remaining towns make up the remainder of the High Desert: [[Pioneertown]], [[Yucca Valley]], [[Joshua Tree, California|Joshua Tree]], [[Landers, California|Landers]], and [[Morongo Valley]].

==Politics==
San Bernardino County is a county in which candidates from both major political parties have won in recent elections. Republican [[Donald Trump]] carried the county in [[2024 United States presidential election in California|2024]], flipping it for the first time in a presidential race since [[2004 United States presidential election in California|2004]].

In past presidential elections, Democrat [[Joe Biden]] carried the county by a majority and by double digits as well as [[Hillary Clinton]] in [[2016 United States presidential election in California|2016]]. The Democratic Party also carried the county in [[2008 United States presidential election in California|2008]] and [[2012 United States presidential election in California|2012]], when [[Barack Obama]] won majorities of the county's votes, and in [[1992 United States presidential election in California|1992]] and [[1996 United States presidential election in California|1996]], when [[Bill Clinton]] won pluralities. Republican [[George W. Bush]] took the county in [[2000 United States presidential election in California|2000]] by a plurality and in 2004 by a majority. The county is split between heavily Latino, middle-class, and Democratic areas and wealthier conservative areas. The heavily Latino cities of [[Ontario, California|Ontario]] and [[San Bernardino, California|San Bernardino]] went for [[John Kerry]] in 2004 but with a relatively low voter turnout. In 2006, San Bernardino's population exceeded 201,000, and in 2004, only 42,520 votes were cast in the city; that same year, strongly Republican [[Rancho Cucamonga, California|Rancho Cucamonga]] had over 145,000 residents, of whom 53,054 voted.

In the 1980s, Northern San Bernardino County proposed to create [[Mojave County, California|Mojave County]] due to the abysmal service levels the county provided. Ultimately, the vote for county secession failed. From 2004 to 2016, the county was embroiled in a corruption scandal over the Colonies housing development in [[Upland, California|Upland]] with real estate developer Jeff Burum. The scandal resulted in $102 million being paid to Burum's real estate company. Supervisor Bill Postmus pleaded guilty to 10 felonies in regard to his previous post as county assessor. In 2020, voters approved Measure K, which limited county supervisors to one term instead of three, while reducing pay from 250 thousand dollars to 60 thousand dollars. The county's primary law enforcement agency is the [[San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department]]. The department provides law enforcement services in the unincorporated areas of the county and in 14 contract cities, operates the county jail system, provides marshal services in the county superior courts, and has numerous other divisions to serve the residents of the county.

California Attorney General [[Jerry Brown]] sued the county in April 2007 under the state's [[California Environmental Quality Act|environmental quality act]] for failing to account for the impact of [[global warming]] in the county's 25-year growth plan, approved in March. The [[Center for Biological Diversity]], the [[Sierra Club]] and the [[Audubon Society]] also sued in a separate case. According to Brendan Cummings, a senior attorney for the [[plaintiff]]s: "San Bernardino has never seen a project it didn't like. They rubber-stamp development. It's very much of a frontier mentality." According to county spokesman David Wert, only 15% of the county is controlled by the county{{clarify|date=October 2019}}; the rest is cities and federal and state land. However, the county says it will make sure employment centers and housing are near transportation corridors to reduce traffic and do more to promote compact development and mass transit. The county budgeted $325,000 to fight the lawsuit.<ref name="Environment" />
