== History ==
Originally land of the Poquonock [[Native Americans in the United States|Native Americans]], the area was first settled in 1660 as part of Windsor, organized as the Parish of Wintonbury in 1736. Wintonbury comes from three names from neighboring towns '''Win'''dsor, Farming'''ton''', and Sims'''bury'''. Bloomfield is bordered by [[Windsor, Connecticut|Windsor]] to the northeast, [[East Granby, Connecticut|East Granby]] to the north, [[Simsbury, Connecticut|Simsbury]] and [[Avon, Connecticut|Avon]] to the west, and [[West Hartford, Connecticut|West Hartford]] and [[Hartford, Connecticut|Hartford]] to the south.

The northern border of Bloomfield is formed by the [[Farmington River]]. The west side of the town is flanked by [[Talcott Mountain]], part of the [[Metacomet Ridge]], a mountainous [[trap rock]] ridgeline that stretches from [[Long Island Sound]] to nearly the [[Vermont]] border. Notable features of the Metacomet Ridge in Bloomfield include [[Penwood State Park]] and the Tariffville Gorge of the Farmington River, on the borders of East Granby, Simsbury, and Bloomfield. The {{convert|51|mi|adj=on}} [[Metacomet Trail]] traverses the ridge.

==Transportation==
The major east–west throughway in Bloomfield is [[Connecticut Route 218|Route 218]], which starts at the Simsbury Road/Hall Boulevard split at the [[West Hartford, Connecticut|West Hartford]] line and inches north toward Cottage Grove Road before heading eastbound. Bloomfield also has two major north–south highways: Blue Hills Avenue ([[Connecticut Route 187|Route 187]]) and Bloomfield/Tunxis Avenues ([[Connecticut Route 189|Route 189]]). These highways merge when approaching the [[Windsor, Connecticut|Windsor]] line but before returning to Bloomfield.

Eleven bus routes in [[Connecticut Transit]]'s Hartford Division serve Bloomfield: 36, 46, 50, 52, 54, 56, 72, 74, 76, 92, and 153.

The population density was {{convert|753.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 8,195 housing units at an average density of {{convert|315.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 35.7% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 57.5% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.03% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.9% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.01% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.70% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 3% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 5.6% of the population.

There were 8,554 households, out of which 19.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 16.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Bloomfield has a [[Town council]] government. The Town Council elects a chair, who is designated as Mayor, two weeks after the election. Mayor Danielle Wong began her first term as Mayor in November 2022.

The town was once part of larger [[Farmington, Connecticut|Farmington]] Plantation. In 1785, it split away and became a part of the town of [[Bristol, Connecticut|Bristol]]. Burlington has a central business district which primarily runs along Spielman Highway (Route 4). In hopes of further developing the central business district, a Library Lane Advisory Commission was formed in June 2021 to help provide concepts for the use of the property. In 1779, the Congregational Church laid out nine school districts, each with its own schoolhouse. In 1948, Burlington Consolidated School opened to replace these schoolhouses. By 1962, the [[Regional School District 10|Regional School District #10]] was established to serve Burlington and [[Harwinton, Connecticut|Harwinton]].

Johnnycake Mountain Meadows Airfield (22B) was an airport in the northwestern corner of Burlington and was sometimes referenced as "Mountain Meadows". The town was incorporated in 1739, one year after settlement of the town center began. ==Arts and culture==
Multiple events are hosted at the Goshen Fairgrounds each year, located on Route 63 south just outside the center of town. One such event is the Goshen Stampede, a festival held annually on [[Father's Day]] weekend that hosts a [[rodeo]], [[demolition derby]], music festival, and truck pull. Later in the summer on [[Labor Day]] weekend is the annual Goshen Fair. As the county's largest [[Agricultural show|agricultural fair]], it features farm animal judgement shows, competition and contest in log chopping, log sawing, hay-bale throwing and the like. There are food, art, photography, baked goods, and craft contests, as well as rides for children, carnival games, and craft and food vendors. Attendance over the three days can range up to 50,000 people.

Traditionally at the beginning of August, and usually the first Saturday, the Church of Christ presents an Annual Blueberry Festival where they sell blueberry pies, blueberries and host a blueberry breakfast. It is very well known and people from all around the area come to enjoy the festival and the pies. The blueberry pies are available for sale all year long, as well as other flavors made by hand by the congregation (apple, peach, and blueberry-peach). Mini pies are also sold by the church at the Goshen Fair.

Cinzi Lavin’s play ''A Goodnight Kiss'' is based on the historical love-letters of two young Goshen residents during the Civil War. Produced and directed by Kathy Kelly, it premiered at Goshen Players in 2025.<ref>

Prior to its purchase by English settlers in 1662, the area around Moodus was inhabited by [[Indigenous peoples of the Americas|Native American]] [[Algonquian peoples|Algonquians]]. During the nineteenth century, Moodus was advertised as the "Twine Capital of America", with twelve mills in operation. The most successful was Brownell & Company. A part of that [[textile mill]] history is preserved in the Johnsonville historical section of Moodus, named after one of the mill owners. Moodus had many local resorts that operated during the course of the early and mid-20th century. During the summer seasons of the 1940s and 1950s, people visiting the more than 30 Moodus-area resorts quadrupled East Haddam's population to about 20,000 people. Nearby Bailey Beach on [[Bashan Lake]] was popular with local residents and vacationers alike. The village center, dubbed "Downtown Moodus", located formerly at the intersection of routes [[Connecticut Route 151|CT 151]] and [[Connecticut Route 149|CT 149]], was a popular destination for resort guests. However most of the village was razed after the citizens of East Haddam controversially voted in 1967 to accept [[urban renewal]] funding to build a new commercial district for Moodus a quarter mile east, along CT 149. Moodus is in eastern Middlesex County, in the northwest part of the town of East Haddam. Connecticut Routes [[Connecticut Route 149|149]] and [[Connecticut Route 151|151]] pass through the village, Route 149 running northeast–southwest and Route 151 running northwest–south. The population density was {{convert|438.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 592 housing units at an average density of {{convert|205.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial composition of the CDP was 97.78% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.40% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.48% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.16% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.79% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.40% from two or more races. For every 100 females, there were 102.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and older, there were 95.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $52,188, and the median income for a family was $68,500. Males had a median income of $42,938 versus $33,214 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $32,475. None of the families and 2.4% of the population were living below the poverty line, including none younger than age 18 and none of those older than age 64.

In the book ''Legendary Connecticut'', author David Philips asserts that the Moodus noises were the source of an indigenous religious cult important to local Native Americans. Local Algonquin chiefs would gather around Mount Tom in order to experience the living presence of the god [[Hobomok (god)|Hobomok]]. [[Pequot]], [[Mohegan]] and [[Narragansett people|Narragansett]] tribes participated with this cult, and according to local Alison Guinness, the Wongums were involved as well.<ref name="Boudillion" /> Hobomok was considered the spirit of the dead and worshipped by the tribe that inhabited the area. The [[Puritan]]s that came to inhabit the area considered him evil. However, to the native people he was more like a Zeus or a Hades, a god that can do good or bad, depending on what mood he was in.<ref>Philips, David E.
