The &#039;&#039;&#039;British Rail Class 114&#039;&#039;&#039; [[diesel multiple unit]]s were built by [[Derby Carriage and Wagon Works|BR Derby]] from September 1956 to July 1957. Forty-nine 2-car units were built, numbered E50001-49 for driving motors (later renumbered 53001-49) and E56001-49 for driving trailers (later renumbered 54001-49). The units were used in the early days out of 40A Lincoln TMD (LN) on services all over the county, although a small number were transferred to 41A Sheffield (Darnall) during 1959/60. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The vehicles were the first type to be built at Derby with the longer 63 ft 6 in underframe, and the first Derby vehicles to be built from steel. This design would be re-used in the [[British Rail Class 116|116]] and [[British Rail Class 117|117]]. The type was classed a heavyweight unit; with their original {{cvt|150|hp}} BUT engines, they were found to be underpowered for the local scheduled services, and lost time especially when towing a van (which was a regular occurrence in that area). The most problematic stretch was the 1 in 122 for just under a mile near Ancaster which reduced these units to {{Cvt|45|mph}} even on full power. As a result of this, several 3-car formations were put together using two power cars and one trailer. The type was re-engined with Leyland Albion {{cvt|230|bhp|kW}} motors.{{Citation needed|date=November 2021|reason=Removed citation under WP:UGC}} &lt;br /&gt;

These were used in the main on [[Poacher Line|Grantham - Boston/Skegness]] and [[Barton Line|Lincoln - Cleethorpes]] workings during 1957, and would be a familiar sight in the Lincolnshire area until the early 1990s.{{cn|date=April 2022}}&lt;br /&gt;

Formations noted in Railway Observer magazine were E50008/E50007/E56007, E50011/E50012/E56012, E50038/E50039/E56015 and E50015/E50035/E56035. Spare trailers were stored at various locations - E56016/25/40 at Blankney &amp;amp; Metheringham, E56010/39 at Bardney and E56004/20/22/37/38/44/45 near Sleaford South Junction. &lt;br /&gt;

E50029/30/31/32/33/34 and their respective trailers were transferred to Stratford between February and April 1957 in exchange for Derby 2-car lightweight units, but between June and October the 114s moved back to Lincoln. &lt;br /&gt;

* On 25 January 1963, a set working the Grantham - Lincoln Central service collided with the rear (tender) of a stationary Class B1 steam locomotive near Bracebridge Gas Sidings Signalbox near Lincoln. * On 12 February 1968, the 06:48 Sheffield - Cleethorpes was hit in the rear by a coal train ran. The Class 114 had a parcel van as a tail load which took the force of the impact, but the rear cab was still severely crushed.&lt;br /&gt;
* On 28 November 1969, 50031 + 56031 ran through level crossing gates at Great Coates level crossing near Grimsby, striking a Dodge articulated lorry and carrying it 46 feet into the station. 3 people needed hospital treatment. All vehicles were badly damaged. ==Prototype unit==&lt;br /&gt;
In addition to the 49 production units, a fiftieth two-car unit (cars 50000 and 56000) was built to test the Rolls-Royce engine type and [[Twin Disc]] hydraulic transmission later used on the [[British Rail Class 127|Class 127]] units. Initially the unit underwent trials on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway in early 1957, but was subsequently also allocated to Lincoln and worked the same diagrams as the other 49. The units were replaced by newer [[List of British Rail diesel multiple unit classes#Sprinters|&amp;quot;Sprinter&amp;quot; units]] in the late 1980s. ==Non-passenger use==&lt;br /&gt;

Five units were rebuilt as parcels units with [[roller-shutter]] doors in 1988. These were repainted in Royal Mail red livery, and were based at [[Cambridge]] depot. They were withdrawn in 1991. Four of the units were scrapped, whilst the fifth was rebuilt as a test train for the new [[automatic train protection|ATP]]. This unit passed into [[English Welsh and Scottish Railway|EWS]] ownership with the privatisation of Britain&#039;s railways. It was then used in a new role of a route-learner unit, until it was withdrawn in 2002. ADB 977775/6 were converted into an Automatic Train Protection demonstration train and fitted with both types of ATP systems from the BR pilot schemes c1991. The S1 had a unique [[6-4-4-6]] [[wheel arrangement]], meaning that it had two pairs of [[cylinder (engine)|cylinder]]s, each driving two pairs of [[driving wheel]]s. To achieve stability at fast passenger train speeds (above 100&amp;amp;nbsp;mph), articulation was not used. The S1 was completed on January 31, 1939, at Altoona shop, and was numbered 6100.&lt;br /&gt;

The problem of wheel slippage, along with a wheelbase that was too long for many of the rail line&#039;s curves, limited the S1&#039;s usefulness. No further S1 models were built as focus shifted to the much smaller but more practical class [[Pennsylvania Railroad class T1|T1]] in June 1940. As early as June 1936, the management of [[Pennsylvania Railroad]] decided to build a new passenger locomotive to replace its aging [[Pennsylvania Railroad K4 class|K4s]] locomotives. They also hoped that the new S1 steam locomotive would have a performance equal to their [[Pennsylvania Railroad class GG1]] electric engine and would be capable of hauling a 1,000-ton passenger train at 100&amp;amp;nbsp;mph.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;lionel&amp;quot; /&amp;gt; A conference was held between Baldwin Locomotive Works officials and W. F. Kiesel, J. V. B. Duer and W. R. Elsey for PRR, where PRR demanded a passenger locomotive to haul 15 standard cars at 100&amp;amp;nbsp;mph on level track between [[Paoli, Pennsylvania|Paoli]] and Chicago. Baldwin presented several [[4-8-4]] and [[4-4-4-4]] designs made for other railroads. However, PRR rejected the 4-8-4 design in favor of a rigid frame [[Duplex locomotive|duplex]] and asked Baldwin to consider the wheel arrangement 4-4-6-4. PRR preferred 4-4-4-4 and asked Baldwin to consider a passenger version with 6 ft 8 in drivers and a freight version with 6 ft drivers. However, the cooperation between PRR and Baldwin, which proceeded without signing any agreement or contract for the development of the new high-speed duplex engine, didn&#039;t go smoothly. Ten months after the first conference (April 1937), PRR ended Baldwin Locomotive Work&#039;s consultation and assigned the task to a consortium of [[Baldwin Locomotive Works]], [[American Locomotive Company]], and [[Lima Locomotive Works]] under a joint contract. On 28 April 1937, PRR&#039;s Board authorized $300,000 for this experimental high-speed passenger locomotive project. The design started with a 4-4-4-4 duplex.&lt;br /&gt;

==Duplex design==&lt;br /&gt;
The benefits of a duplex design included lighter machinery, shorter cylinder stroke, less wear, lower piston thrust, smaller more efficient cylinders, and a more stable&lt;br /&gt;
frame than an articulated underframe; also, no hinged connection had to be maintained.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Pennsy Power by Alvin F. Staufer | 1962 | Page 217&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Reduced hammer blows on the track resulted in lower maintenance cost. Two sets of drivers with four wheels each could have lighter (as much as 25%) running gear than a locomotive with all four axles coupled together, smaller and lighter moving parts ensured less wear and tear. Baldwin&#039;s chief engineer believed that the 8-coupled, two-cylinder locomotives of the time were at or near practical limits in terms of steam flow, cylinder efficiency could be improved at high speed by getting the same power from four smaller cylinders with proportionately larger valves. In August 1941, PRR VP-Western Region [[James M. Symes]], a senior official who turned against the idea of duplex engine in later years, approved the extension of stall no. 30 of the Crestline roundhouse to accommodate the S1. The stall had a connection at the back because the S1 could only be turned on a wye, but not on the roundhouse&#039;s turntable.&lt;br /&gt;

[[Timken Company|Timken]] roller bearings were equipped on the crosshead pins, all engine trucks, and drive axles as well as the tender trucks. ==Boiler, steaming quality and streamlining==&lt;br /&gt;
The boiler for the S1 was the largest built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; with {{convert|660|sqft|m2}} of direct heating surface and 500 one-inch diameter tubes, the total heating surface area of S1 was {{convert|7,746|sqft|m2}}; it was 99.3% as massive as the boiler for [[Union Pacific Big Boy|Union Pacific&#039;s 4000-class &amp;quot;Big Boy&amp;quot; locomotives]]. In terms of drawbar horsepower, the S1 was 13% more powerful than the Big Boy, with {{cvt|7200|hp|kW}} and {{cvt|6345|hp|kW}} respectively.{{Citation needed|date=October 2023|reason=I can&#039;t find a credible source for either of these numbers. Kratville gives Big Boy 6290 max.}} The large [[Belpaire firebox]] met the Pennsy&#039;s standards; its heating surface area included that supplied by seven American Arch circulators. Water passed through 5.5-inch horizontal tube met at the centerline with the other cross tube forming the bottom of the 7-inch vertical tube that sprayed the water up into the steam space above the crown sheet. The lowest set pair of tubes was forward with the side openings of the other six steadily rising toward the back.&lt;br /&gt;

A large Worthington 6 SA [[feedwater heater]] was fitted with a 7 SA pump to handle the enormous boiler&#039;s thirst. The six-wheel [[leading truck|leading]] and [[trailing truck]]s were added, as the locomotive was too heavy for four-wheel units. The lack of curve compatibility led to the S1 not being used for its intended long-distance express service. Although the S1 had less than half (47%) its total weight on the driving wheels, its [[Factor of adhesion]] was still close to the much more successful [[PRR Q2]], Santa Fe &amp;quot;Northern&amp;quot; 4-8-4s the 2900s, and the renowned [[Norfolk and Western J class (1941)|N&amp;amp;W J class]] 4-8-4s. More than half of its weight was carried by the three-axle pilot (leading) and trailing trucks instead of the drivers, which left the four duplex driving axles susceptible to wheel slippage. According to an official report from PRR dated December 1, 1945, which is now stored in The [[Hagley Museum and Library]], No. 6100 was awaiting engine truck repairs at Crestline. It was expected to be returned in service after a few days. This is one solid proof that the S1 was still in service at least until December 1945. At the time, at least 13 [[Pennsylvania Railroad class T1|T1]] [[4-4-4-4]]s were already put into service.&lt;br /&gt;

The design flaws of the S1 led to only one example being produced. Before the S1 was officially put in revenue service, the PRR already ordered the T1s.
