Illinois 251 runs parallel to Interstate 39 and U.S. 51 for most of the length of I-39 in Illinois. Like [[Illinois Route 351]], it can be considered a spur, loop or alternate of its parent route, U.S. 51. Illinois 251 terminates about {{convert|8|mi|km|0|abbr=on}} north of the southern terminus of I-39.

The road parallels the east bank of the [[Rock River (Illinois)|Rock River]] through [[Rockford, Illinois|Rockford]], where the highway goes north on Eleventh Street, west on Harrison, north on Kishwaukee, west on Walnut then split between northbound Third and southbound Second through downtown Rockford. After downtown, both directions take the southbound lanes' Second Street name as a divided urban expressway (also badged as Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Drive) for a couple of miles north of downtown Rockford. Illinois 251 was established in 1982 when the first segment of I-39 opened between [[Rockford, Illinois|Rockford]] and [[Bloomington, Illinois|Bloomington]]. IL 56 begins at a partial cloverleaf interchange with US 30/IL 47 in [[Sugar Grove, Illinois|Sugar Grove]], located east of the [[Aurora Municipal Airport]]. While US 30 exits the road to travel south toward [[Montgomery, Illinois|Montgomery]], the road continues as IL 56. The road becomes a free limited-access road for the next {{convert|4|mi|km}}. IL 56 then meets Galena Boulevard at another partial cloverleaf interchange, which directly connects to Aurora and its downtown area. With the exception of the Golf View Road junction for westbound traffic, this interchange is the only intermediate exit between US 30/IL 47 and [[Interstate 88 (Illinois)|I-88]]. Traveling eastbound, IL 56 merges with I-88 just west of [[Orchard Road (Illinois)|Orchard Road]] and continues along the tollway until intersecting with [[Illinois Route 31|IL 31]]. The route travels north along IL 31 until turning east along State Street in North Aurora. The route then crosses over the [[Fox River (Illinois River tributary)|Fox River]] before traveling along a sharp S-curve.

IL 56 travels along Butterfield Road in an east-northeast direction beyond [[Illinois Route 25|IL 25]], paralleling I-88. Butterfield Road serves as a major arterial road within the [[Illinois Technology and Research Corridor]]. Between the Batavia Spur of the [[Illinois Prairie Path]] and the [[Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway]] overpass, IL 56 serves as the southern border for [[Fermilab]]. Beyond the EJ&E Railway overpass, the road becomes a [[divided highway]]. IL 56 then parallels the Aurora branch of the Illinois Prairie Path between IL 59 and St. James Farm. IL 56 goes through commercial and industrial developments beyond I-355 in [[Downers Grove, Illinois|Downers Grove]], such as [[Yorktown Center]] in [[Lombard, Illinois|Lombard]]. In [[Oak Brook, Illinois|Oak Brook]], IL 56 exits off the mainline to continue along Butterfield Road; traffic continuing straight would end up on [[Cermak Road|22nd Street]]. ==Route description==
IL 5 is the main road on the north bank of the [[Rock River (Illinois)|Rock River]], serving the cities of Rock Island, [[Moline, Illinois|Moline]], [[Silvis, Illinois|Silvis]], and [[Carbon Cliff, Illinois|Carbon Cliff]].

IL 5 begins at US 67 (11th Street) in Rock Island, traveling eastward towards the Milan Beltway. At this point, it travels along the limited-access road and becomes John Deere Road. Continuing eastward in Moline, it then meets I-74/US 6 at a cloverleaf interchange. After leaving Moline, it serves the [[Black Hawk College]] and the [[John Deere World Headquarters]]. After this, the route begins to curve northward, and is known as John Deere Expressway for the rest of the route (although most signage along the rest of the route reads Illinois 5). In Carbon Cliff, the route meets IL 84 and IL 92 at a [[Partial cloverleaf interchange|parclo]]. At this point, IL 92 follows along the rest of IL 5. Also, the road curves northeastward, and then eastward. Continuing east, they then meet I-80/IL 110 at a cloverleaf interchange. At this point, IL 5 transitions into I-88, effectively ending IL 5, while IL 92/IL 110 travels along I-88.

==History==
SBI Route 5 originally ran from [[East Dubuque, Illinois|East Dubuque]] to [[Chicago]], mostly along the current [[U.S. Route 20 in Illinois|US 20]]. The portion that ran from [[Belvidere, Illinois|Belvidere]] through [[Rockford, Illinois|Rockford]] is now known as Charles Street in Rockford, and was superseded by what is now the expressway extension of the US 20 Rockford Bypass to Belvidere.
