The area of Ōsaki was part of ancient [[Hyūga Province]]. During the [[Edo Period]], the area was part of the holdings of [[Satsuma Domain]]. The village of Ōsaki was established on May 1, 1889 with the creation of the modern municipalities system. Ōsaki was raised to town status on
January 1, 1936.

==History==
Higashikata Village was established on April 1, 1908. It became the town of Koniya on April 1, 1936. As with all of the Amami Islands, the village came under the administration of the United States from July 1, 1946 to December 25, 1953. On September 1, 1956 Koniya merged with three neighboring villages to form the town of Setouchi.

The town economy is primarily based on agriculture, with [[sugar cane]] and citrus [[horticulture]] as the main crops. Industries include [[shochu]] refining and commercial fishing.

Some of the islands have been inhabited since at least the [[Jōmon period]]. During historic times, mentioned is made of the islands in the ''[[Shoku Nihongi]]'' and the ''[[Heike Monogatari]],'' and local legend states that at least some of the islands were a refuge for the defeated [[Heike clan]] following the [[Genpei War]]. During the [[Edo period]], the islands came under the control of the [[Shimazu clan]] of [[Satsuma Domain]].

After the [[Meiji Restoration]], these islands were allotted to Kawanabe District of [[Satsuma Province]], and then transferred to Ōshima District of [[Ōsumi Province]] in 1897. In 1908, the islands were grouped together with the Tokara Islands into {{nihongo|Jitto Village|十島村|Jittō-son}}, of which seven were inhabited. However, the three northern inhabited islands in the archipelago, known as the {{nihongo|'''Kamimishima'''|上三島|}}: Iōjima, Kuroshima and Takeshima, remained under the control of Japan, and were placed under the administration of the village of [[Mishima, Kagoshima|Mishima]]. The remaining Tokara Islands reverted to Japan on 10 February 1952 and are now administered as the village of Toshima. The area of the modern town of Kudoyama was within ancient [[Kii Province]] and was long associated with [[Mount Koya]]. In the [[Heian period]], the temple of [[Jison-in]], which had the grave of the mother of [[Kūkai]]. During the [[Sengoku period]], it was the location of exile for [[Sanada Masayuki]] and [[Sanada Yukimura]]. The village of Kudyama was established with the creation of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889, and was raised to town status on September 1, 1910. The village of Kane was annexed by Kudoyama on March 31, 1955.

Kudoyama has a [[mayor-council]] form of government with a directly elected mayor and a [[unicameral]] town council of 10 members. Kudoyama collectively with the town of Kōya, contributes one member to the [[Wakayama Prefectural Assembly]]. Chibu is located on {{Nihongo|Chiburijima|知夫里島 }}, the smallest of the Dōzen group of islands, and includes 18 smaller uninhabited islands located nearby waters.

Located on an island located in the [[Sea of Japan]], Chibu is within the [[Geography of Japan#Climate|Sea of Japan climate zone]]. Summer temperatures, though usually mild, are exacerbated by high humidity. Winter temperatures are also generally mild, though exacerbated by strong wind. The surrounding ocean has a warming effect, making winters milder than the mainland. Consequently, there is very little snow in Chibu, and what snow does fall usually melts quickly.

The nearest weather station is located in [[Ama, Shimane|Ama]] on the nearby island of [[Nakanoshima (Shimane)|Nakanoshima]]. Chibu's average annual high and low temperatures are 17.6 °C (64 °F) and 10.5 °C (51 °F), with yearly mean of 14.4 °C (58 °F). The record high and low temperatures are 34.9 °C (95 °F) and -2.9 °C (27 °F) respectively. The average yearly humidity is 76%. Chibu receives an average of 1,662 mm (65.43 in) of precipitation a year.

Chibujima was composed of 7 hamlets: {{Nihongo|Kōri|郡}}, {{Nihongo|Nibu|仁夫}}, {{Nihongo|Ōe|大江}}, {{Nihongo|Tataku|多沢}}, {{Nihongo|Usuge|薄毛}}, {{Nihongo|Kurii|来居}}, and {{Nihongo|Urumi|古海}}, which were united to form Chibu Village in 1909. The village is served by a sea port located in Kurii which provides ship transportation among the three islands of the Dozen group, to [[Okinoshima, Shimane|Okinoshima]], and to the mainland. There is also a heliport for medical emergencies.

== History ==
The area of Kumiyama was part of ancient [[Yamashiro Province]]. During the [[Edo Period]], the area was part of the direct holdings of the [[Tokugawa shogunate]]. The villages of Sayama and Mimaki were established on April 1, 1889 with the creation of the modern municipalities system. The two villages merged on October 1, 1954 to form the town of Kumiyama.

==Government==
Kumiyama has a [[mayor-council]] form of government with a directly elected mayor and a [[unicameral]] village council of 14 members. Kumiyama, collectively with the city of Uji, contributes five members to the Kyoto Prefectural Assembly. In terms of national politics, the village is part of the [[Kyoto 6th district]] of the [[House of Representatives of Japan|lower house]] of the [[Diet of Japan]].

==Economy==
Kumiyama has a mixed economy. The northern half of the town area is a large rice-growing area called Ogura Pond Reclaimed Fields. To the west of [[Japan National Route 1]], suburban agriculture is thriving. The [[daikon]] radish in particular is a regional brand called "Yodo daikon". Because Japan National Route 1 runs through the town, it is possible to quickly ship products to consumption areas. The Kumiyama Industrial Park is located in the area adjacent to the south of Ogura Pond Reclaimed Fields, and there are many establishments mainly involved in metal processing, plastic processing, and food manufacturing. This was the site of the former Kyoto Airfield, which was constructed during World War II, which was converted into an [[industrial park]] after the war.
