==History==
The area of the modern town of Taishi was within ancient [[Kawachi Province]]. The area has been inhabited since the [[Japanese Paleolithic]], due to the abundance of raw materials for [[stone tool]]s from Mount Nijō. During the [[Asuka period]], the Takeuchi Kaido, one of Japan's first "official roads", which connected the port of Sakai with [[Yamato Province]] was constructed. It was used by [[Ono no Imoko]] and others during the [[Japanese missions to Sui China]]. Around this time, Yamato's [[Asuka, Nara|Asuka]] was called "Far Asuka", while the area around Taishi Town was called "Nearby Asuka". The town has many imperial tombs, including that of [[Emperor Bidatsu]], [[Emperor Yōmei]], [[Empress Suiko]], and [[Prince Shotoku]].

The villages of Isonaga and Yamada were established within Ishikawa District with the creation of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889. On April 1, 1896 the area became part of [[Minamikawachi District, Osaka]]. The two villages merged on September 30, 1956 to form the town of Taishi, which was named after Prince Shotoku.

Taishi has a [[mayor-council]] form of government with a directly elected mayor and a [[unicameral]] city council of 11 members. Taishi collectively with the cities of Tondabayashi and Ōsakasayama, and other municipalities of Minamikawachi District contributes two members to the [[Osaka Prefectural Assembly]]. In terms of national politics, the town is part of Osaka 15th district of the [[House of Representatives of Japan|lower house]] of the [[Diet of Japan]].

==Transportation==
Kikonai's station, [[Kikonai Station]], is located at the north end of the [[Seikan Tunnel]], which connects the islands of [[Hokkaido]] and [[Honshū]]. The town government is actively promoting the development of the [[Hokkaidō Shinkansen]] and proposes offering [[intermodal passenger transport|intermodal]] service on the line.

[[Matsumae Line]] used to run from Kikonai but it was abolished in 1988. The section of [[Esashi Line]] from Kikonai to [[Esashi, Hokkaido (Hiyama)|Esashi]] was also abolished in May 2014.

Yoichi is the home of the [[Yoichi distillery]] owned by [[Nikka Whisky Distilling]]. Yoichi is also famous for its fruit, particularly apples, and wine, and Yoichi apple juice is also famous throughout Japan. Yoichi is also becoming a well-known wine region. In Sawa-machi, near the port, there are many fish processing factories, producing goods such as migaki-nishin.

Yoichi is a coastal town, with beaches Moire kaisuiyokujo. Yoichi is popular with surfers from autumn through to spring, but in summer there is little swell, and the coastline is better suited to kayaking and swimming. Yoichi is easily accessible by [[bus]] and [[train]], which run approximately hourly to and from [[Otaru]], [[Sapporo]], and [[Kutchan]], a town 45 minutes south of Yoichi where world class [[skiing]] and [[snowboarding]] may be enjoyed. A new motorway is being built connecting Yoichi to Sapporo, reducing the drive to 30 minutes. It is due for completion in 2018.

The villages of Nagaoka, Kawane, Kaminoai and Ishizaki were created within Higashiibaraki District and the village of Numasaki was created within Kashima District with the establishment of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889. Nagaoka was elevated to town status on February 11, 1955 and merged with Kawane and Kaminoai to form the town of Ibaraki the same day. Ibaraki annexed neighboring Ishizaki on March 5, 1958. The town was set to merge with [[Mito, Ibaraki|Mito]], on December 8, 2007, but following the election of a new mayor in April 2007, these plans were abandoned.

==History==
The [[Chiba clan]], or branches of it, ruled the [[Shimōsa Province|Shimōsa]] region for about 400 years from the [[Kamakura period]]. During the [[Sengoku period]], the Chiba clan gained the protection of such powerful clans as the [[Late Hōjō clan|Odawara Hōjō clan]], allowing them to get a stronger foothold over the area. They lost control when the Hōjō clan was overthrown in 1590 by [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]]. After that, General Kiso Yoshimasa settled in the region. He restored the Ajito Castle, which was the inspiration for the name "Asahi." When poet Nonoguchi Takamasa visited the area in 1852, he wrote a poem about the general, from which the name "Asahi," which can mean "rising sun," was taken:

"from Shinano /
adoring the rising sun /
he came to the eastern land /
and there remains the evidence of his earthly life"

In the [[Edo period]], various agricultural changes in the region occurred. The first was the reclamation of the "Sea of Camellias", a vast lake, which was drained into the Pacific Ocean to create the fertile Higata Hachiman-goku. The second was spurred on by the arrival of agrarian scholar Ohara Yugaku in 1835 and other ''[[kokugaku]]'' scholars who helped to revive agriculture in the area. The town of Asahi was established with the creation of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889. It was raised to city status on July 1, 1954. On July 1, 2005, the city of Asahi, the town of [[Hikata, Chiba|Hikata]] (from [[Katori District, Chiba|Katori District]]), and the towns of [[Iioka, Chiba|Iioka]] and [[Unakami, Chiba|Unakami]] (both from [[Kaijo District, Chiba|Kaijo District]]) merged on equal terms to form the new Asahi city.

In March 2011, the city was greatly affected by [[2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami|9.0 magnitude earthquake, tsunami]], and subsequent [[Fukushima nuclear disaster|nuclear disaster]]. During the [[Edo period]], Tomisato was part of [[Shimōsa Province]] and was an area where the [[Tokugawa Shogunate]] had numerous ranches for raising horse. After the [[Meiji restoration]], Tomisato Village was founded on April 1, 1889 within [[Inba District, Chiba|Inba District]], Chiba Prefecture with the establishment of the modern municipalities system, and the government encouraged the settlement of the area by farmers. During the 1960s and 1970s, the village was the center of the [[Sanrizuka Struggle]] against the construction of the Narita International Airport. After then airport was completed, the population of the village grew rapidly. On April 1, 1985 it was elevated to town status, and later was elevated to city status on April 1, 2002.

Nagara is part of ancient [[Kazusa Province]]. The village of Nagara was established with the creation of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889. Nagara was raised to town status in 1955 by merging with the neighboring village of Hiyoshi, and part of the village of Mizukami.

Chōnan is rich in archeological sites from the [[Jōmon|Jōmon period]], [[Yayoi|Yayoi period]], and [[Kofun|Kofun period]] periods. Under the [[ritsuryō]] reforms of the [[Nara period]] the area of present-day Chōnan became part of [[Kazusa Province]]. Two [[Tendai]] Buddhist temples were established in this period, [[Kasamori-ji]] and [[Chōfuku-ji]]. At the end of the [[Heian period]] the area came under the control of the military leader [[Taira no Tadatsune]], and his descendants continued their control of the area in the [[Kamakura period]]. In the 1456 the [[Takeda clan]] built [[Chōnan Castle]] as an extension of the larger [[Mariyatsu Castle]]. == History ==
As with all of Tokushima Prefecture, the area of Awa was part of ancient [[Awa Province (Tokushima)|Awa Province]]. The Yoshino River valley was settled since at least the [[Kofun period]], and archaeologists have found many [[kofun]] [[burial mound]]s. During the [[Edo period]], the area was part of the holdings of [[Tokushima Domain]] ruled by the [[Hachisuka clan]] from their seat at [[Tokushima Castle]]. Following the [[Meiji restoration]], it was organized into villages within [[Awa District, Tokushima|Awa District]] and [[Itano District, Tokushima]] with the creation of the modern municipalities system on October 1, 1889. The villages of Hisakatsu, Isawa and Hayashi were founded within Awa District on October 1, 1889. Hayashi was raised to town status on November 1, 1928, and Hisakatsu on November 3, 1951. Hayashi, Hisakatsu and Isawa merged to form the town of Awa on March 31, 1955. The city of Awa was established on April 1, 2005, from the merger of the former town of Awa, absorbing the town of [[Ichiba, Tokushima|Ichiba]] from Awa District, and the towns of [[Donari, Tokushima|Donari]] and [[Yoshino, Tokushima|Yoshino]] (from Itano District).
