The older place name of '''Tayouan''' derives from the ethnonym of a nearby [[Taiwanese aborigines|Taiwanese aboriginal]] tribe, and was written by the Dutch and Portuguese variously as ''Taiouwang'', ''Tayowan'', etc.<ref name="Mair">{{cite web |last=Mair |first=V. After the Dutch were ousted {{circa|lk=no|1661}} by [[Koxinga]], Han immigrants renamed the area "Anping" after the [[Anping Bridge]] in [[Quanzhou]], [[Fujian]]. Soon after [[Taiwan under Qing rule|Qing rule]] was established in 1683, the name "Taiwan" ({{lang|zh-hant|{{linktext|臺灣}}}}) was officially used to refer to the whole island with the establishment of [[Taiwan Prefecture]].

The history of Anping dates back to the 17th century, when the [[Dutch East India Company]] occupied a "high sandy down" called ''Tayouan'' and built [[Fort Zeelandia (Taiwan)|Fort Zeelandia]].{{sfnp|Valentijn|1903|p=52|ps=: quoting [[Pieter Nuyts|Nuyts, Pieter]] (February 10, 1629)}} The Dutch moved their headquarters to Tayouan after leaving the [[Pescadores]] in 1624.{{sfnp|Campbell|1903|p=548}} Due to silting, the islet has joined with mainland Taiwan.{{sfnp|Campbell|1903|p=549|ps=: "The silting up of the land there has joined on to the mainland of Formosa a number of islets and sandbanks which were well known to the early navigators; one notable case being that of the small island of Tayouan, which is now quite a part of Formosa itself." }}

[[Koxinga]]'s army brought an end to the [[Dutch Formosa|Dutch colonial period]] via the [[Siege of Fort Zeelandia]].

In the [[Taiwan under Japanese rule|Japanese period]], the history of trade between China and Japan unfolded at Anping. According to the 1904 census, the city's population was 5,972.{{sfnp|Takekoshi|1907|p=200}}
