==Route description==
I-481 begins at [[Interstate 81 in New York|I-81]]'s exit 82 (exit 1A on I-81), a [[directional T interchange]] in the South Valley section of the city of [[Syracuse, New York|Syracuse]]. Immediately crossing under [[New York State Route 173|NY 173]], I-481 proceeds eastward alongside Rock Cut Road (unsigned [[County Route 103 (Onondaga County, New York)|County Route 103]] [CR 103]), which meets the freeway at exit 83 heading east. I-481 crosses out of Syracuse and into the town of [[Onondaga, New York|Onondaga]], paralleling Rock Cut Road into [[Clark Reservation State Park]]. After exit 2, I-481 makes a bend to the north, crossing east of Butternut Creek Golf Course as it crosses into the town of [[DeWitt, New York|DeWitt]]. In DeWitt, I-481 enters an interchange (exit 87) with [[New York State Route 5|NY 5]] and [[New York State Route 92|NY 92]] (East Genesee Street) just west of the hamlet of Lyndon. After the junction, I-481 continues bending to the northeast, crossing the west end of Old Erie Canal State Park and east of White Chapel Memory Gardens before entering a large interchange with the eastern terminus of [[Interstate 690|I-690]]. Just north of the interchange, I-481 crosses over [[New York State Route 290|NY 290]] (Manlius Center Road) and [[CSX Transportation]]'s DeWitt Yard. What is now I-481 was originally proposed as parts of two separate highways bypassing the city of [[Syracuse, New York|Syracuse]]. ==Future==
As part of the demolition and replacement of I-81 through [[Downtown Syracuse]], I-481 will be redesignated as I-81, while the current route of I-81 will be redesignated as I-81 Business (I-81 Bus). As part of the project, both interchanges between I-81 and I-481 will be reconstructed. The ramps would be expanded to carry more traffic to account for the increased traffic. Also as part of the project, I-481 would be expanded to three lanes each way between exits 89 (I-690) and 90 (Kirkville Road); to three lanes northbound between exits 90 and 91 (I-90); and to three lanes southbound between exits 96 (I-81) and 95 (Northern Boulevard). The population was 1,131 in the 2010 census. The CDP is named after Apalachin Creek.

Apalachin is in the southeastern section of the [[Owego (town), New York|Town of Owego]] and is west of [[Binghamton, New York|Binghamton]]. It is also part of the Binghamton [[Binghamton metropolitan area|Metropolitan Statistical Area]].

== History ==
The first settler arrived {{circa|1786}}, but the community was not founded until 1836.

On November 14, 1957, the [[Apalachin Meeting]], held with the heads of the [[American Mafia]] at the home of [[Joseph Barbara (mobster)|Joseph Barbara]], an Apalachin resident. The meeting was a conference of mobsters who had gathered to iron out various issues in the underworld. The gathering was quickly broken up when a curious [[New York State Trooper]] turned up and spotted expensive cars at or near the home. Other police officers quickly arrived to arrest those attending the conference and sent some of the most powerful gangsters in the country fleeing through the surrounding countryside. Mafiosi and the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] sometimes just refer to the meeting as ''Apalachin''. This meeting was humorously portrayed in the opening sequence of the 1999 [[motion picture]] ''[[Analyze This]]'', which starred [[Robert De Niro]] and [[Billy Crystal]]. This meeting was also fully depicted in the 1972 film ''[[The Valachi Papers (film)|The Valachi Papers]]'' as well as the 2019 film ''[[Mob Town (2019 film)|Mob Town]]''.

From 1960, until it was cancelled in 2016, the annual Apalachin Firemen's Field Days, was hosted by Apalachin, a four-day carnival, generally held in the first week of June.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://wnbf.com/apalachin-field-days-end/|title=57th Year the Final for Apalachin Firemen's Field Days|last=Whyte|first=Kathy|website=WNBF News Radio 1290|language=en|access-date=2019-07-08}}</ref> This event was started in 1960 and had grown from a small event in a field to having a permanent location with large pavilions (still called the beer and food tents by locals) and a large square of game booths that surround 15-20 carnival rides. The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.54% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.98% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.27% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.62% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.53% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.07% from two or more races. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the community, the population was spread out, with 26.6% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the hamlet was $38,636, and the median income for a family was $42,647. Males had a median income of $21,902 versus $25,357 for females.
