It was first released on 14 May 2001 in the United Kingdom by [[Mute Records]] and a day later in the United States by [[Reprise Records]]. The album was produced by [[Mark Bell (British musician)|Mark Bell]], and was supported by the Exciter Tour, one of the band's most successful tours.

The plant that appears on the cover is the ''[[Agave attenuata]]'', a species of agave sometimes known as the "lion's tail", "swan's neck", or "foxtail" for its development of a curved stem, unusual among agaves.

==Background and composition==
Lyrically, the album covers many different subjects. Martin Gore said that "The Dead of Night" was inspired by a club in London where there were a lot of drugs and mayhem. Gore told MTV Europe that "I Feel Loved" is about when you "feel absolutely like shit, and you feel the worst you've ever felt in your life. Then somehow you think: 'the universe must like me, for making me feel like this'".{{Citation needed|date=October 2022}}

Musically, ''Exciter'' can be described as a very atmospheric and electronic album. Gore had stated that he had been listening to more abstract electronic music in the lead up to recording ''Exciter'', which could have influenced some of the more experimental soundscapes on the album. Gore felt that many songs of the album including "When the Body Speaks" have a 1950s or 1960s sound to them. "Comatose" was massively stripped down from the original demo since the band wanted a more minimalistic arrangement. "Freelove" was one of the final tracks to be completed on the album. "The Dead of Night" features a harsher sound compared to other tracks on the album, making heavy use of analogue synths such as the [[EMS Synthi AKS]]; the practice of largely using analogue synths would become common on later albums by the band.

== Tour ==

The tour began with a North American leg on 4 June 2001; the group performed one rehearsal show and two "warm-up" concerts before the official tour began in [[Montreal|Montreal, Quebec]], Canada, in mid-June 2001. The leg continued until mid-August, concluding with two shows in [[Anaheim, California]].

In late August 2001, the group began a European leg, which started in [[Tallinn]] and culminated in early November in [[Mannheim]], Germany. This was the final show of the tour; a second European leg had been planned for the summer of 2002 but this never happened. ''Exciter'' received generally positive reviews. While many critics praised the album's experimental and digital soundscapes, some felt it was one of the weakest Depeche Mode albums.

In a positive review, ''[[NME]]'' wrote that "Not many long-running groups could make an album this fresh and confident in their 20th year, never mind one which bridges timeless soulman crooning and underground [[techno]]". ''[[Rolling Stone]]'' complimented the album's minimal arrangements, comparing them to early [[Kraftwerk]]. ''[[The A.V. Club]]'' complimented Mark Bell's production on the album, stating that "Bell's subtle, inventive knob-twiddling pairs perfectly with Martin Gore's new batch of somber, subdued songs".

In contrast, ''[[Q (magazine)|Q Magazine]]'' was much more negative in their interpretation of the project, writing: "This time it's Martin Gore who's out of puff. No amount of fashionable tweaking can hide the flimsiness of his offerings".

Despite some mixed reviews, ''Exciter'' still appeared on several EOY 2001 lists such as ''[[Magic (music magazine)|Magic]]'', ''[[Music Express (magazine)|MusikExpress]]'', ''[[Rock Sound|Rocksound]]'', ''Rumba'', ''Visions'', and ''[[WOXY.com|Woxy]]''.

==Re-release==
On 2 October 2007 (3 October in North America), ''Exciter'' was re-released as a two-disc set, along with ''[[Ultra (Depeche Mode album)|Ultra]]'', in the fourth and final set of Depeche Mode reissues. The first disc was a remastered version of the original, on an SACD/CD hybrid (only a CD in the US). The second disc is a DVD which features the album in DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 and PCM Stereo. The B-sides from ''Exciter'' as well as the single version of "Freelove" are included. There are also audio versions of all the live ''Exciter'' tracks played during the ''[[One Night in Paris]]'' film.

Like the other reissues, there is a documentary on the making of ''Exciter'' titled ''Depeche Mode 1999–2001 (Presenting the Intimate and Delicate Side of Depeche Mode)''. The documentary begins with the talks of Gore's writer's block and what they did about it. It also discusses the first three singles, the recording, the cover art and the ''Exciter'' tour (including one of the opening acts, [[Fad Gadget]]). The documentary is around 30 minutes long. The three members of the band are interviewed along with [[Daniel Miller (music producer)|Daniel Miller]], Christian Eigner, [[Peter Gordeno (musician)|Peter Gordeno]], [[Anton Corbijn]], and Mute label representatives. The documentary ends with a "To Be Continued..."

Producer Mark Bell does not appear, and although they discuss the fact that the band decided not to have Corbijn direct ''Exciter'''s music videos, they do not interview the two who did direct them. However, [[John Hillcoat]], who directed "[[I Feel Loved]]", "[[Freelove]]" and "[[Goodnight Lovers]]", is mentioned in passing.

''Ultra'' was the first album the band recorded as a trio since ''[[A Broken Frame]]'' (1982); it was also their first where the band members were not involved with production, with these duties being handled by [[Tim Simenon]] of [[Bomb the Bass]] fame. Though not directly supported by a full-length tour, it was promoted via a brief series of concerts promoted as Ultra Parties.

The album debuted at number one on the [[UK Albums Chart]] and at number five on the US [[Billboard 200|''Billboard'' 200]]. The album was preceded by the singles "[[Barrel of a Gun]]", released on 3 February and "[[It's No Good]]" which was released on 31 March. It was followed by the singles "[[Home (Depeche Mode song)|Home]]", released on 16 June and "[[Useless (song)|Useless]]", released on 20 October.

==Background and composition==
Lyrically, much of the album was inspired by the turmoil the band had faced throughout the 1990s. [[Martin Gore]] said that the opening track "[[Barrel of a Gun]]" is about realising that you do not have to fit someone else's view of the world.<ref>{{Cite magazine |date=January 25, 1997 |title='Barrel Of A Gun' is about understanding what you're about and realising that you don't necessarily fit into somebody else's scheme of things. |magazine=NME}}</ref> The demo version is similar in feel to the final version, although it was recreated from scratch. The drum pattern was cut up from a loop and re-sequenced, as Gore did not want to use an unedited drum loop, but also felt that loops can provide an "immediate atmosphere".<ref>{{Cite magazine |date=July 1997 |title=I think we originally started off with loops, and then tried to recreate them. Musically, the band explored many sounds within the realms of [[alternative rock]] but with larger electronic and trip-hop influences. The band also felt that they wanted to do something different since Alan Wilder had left the band.<ref>{{Cite magazine |date=September 1998 |title=Bong 37 |magazine=BONG}}</ref> [[Tim Simenon]] served as the album's sole producer, who had previously created two remixes for the limited 12" release of the live version of "[[Everything Counts]]" with [[Mark Saunders (record producer)|Mark Saunders]]. He had also been a large fan of the band's music as far back as their appearance on ''[[Some Bizzare Album]]'' in 1981 with the track "[[Speak & Spell (album)|Photographic]]". As Gore and Gahan were impressed with [[Gavin Friday]]'s 1995 album ''[[Shag Tobacco]]'', which he had produced, [[Daniel Miller (music producer)|Daniel Miller]] arranged for him to meet with the band.

"Sister of Night", "[[Useless (song)|Useless]]" and "Insight" were the first demos to have been written. The band played these demos to Simenon when they met, and despite their simplicity he was impressed. Gahan continued to struggle with his [[heroin addiction]] during the early months of the album's production. ==2007 re-release==
On 2 October 2007 (3 October in North America), ''Ultra'' was re-released as a two-disc set, along with ''[[Exciter (Depeche Mode album)|Exciter]]'', completing the Depeche Mode collector's edition catalog. The first disc is a remastered version of the original album, on a SACD/CD hybrid (except in the United States, where it is a CD only). The second disc is a DVD which features the album in DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 and PCM Stereo. The B-sides from the album's singles can be listened to as well, including the standalone single "[[Only When I Lose Myself]]" and its B-sides.

Like the other albums, there is a documentary on the making of ''Ultra'' titled ''Depeche Mode 95–98 (Oh Well, That's the End of the Band...)'', the subtitle of which comes from Gore's initial thoughts about Wilder's departure. The documentary begins with discussion from all parties of Wilder's departure before moving on to early album sessions with Dave Gahan's drug issues present. Eventually, it moves on to Gahan's "death" and rehab. The documentary then covers the recording of ''Ultra'' and ends with a discussion on ''[[The Singles 86-98|The Singles 86>98]]'' and its corresponding singles tour. The whole band is interviewed, along with [[Alan Wilder]], [[Daniel Miller (music producer)|Daniel Miller]], producer [[Bomb the Bass|Tim Simenon]], Mute executives, touring keyboardist [[Peter Gordeno (musician)|Peter Gordeno]], touring drummer Christian Eigner, [[Anton Corbijn]] and others. The remastered version of the album was released on vinyl 30 March 2007 in Germany and 1 October 2007 internationally.
