An '''Air Experience Flight''' (AEF) is a training unit of the [[Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch)]] whose main purpose is to give introductory flying experience to cadets from the [[Air Training Corps]] and the [[Combined Cadet Force]]. As of 2019, thirteen AEFs are active.

==History==
The AEFs, numbered from 1 to 13, were formed across the United Kingdom in 1958, all but two forming on the same day, 8 September.<ref name="rafweb"/> All were equipped with the [[de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk]] T.10 trainer. In the mid-1990s they were merged with co-located [[University Air Squadron]]s (UASs), the Chipmunks being replaced by the existing UAS [[Scottish Aviation Bulldog]] T.1s. == Role and operations ==

Originally the [[United Kingdom|British]] [[Royal Navy]] provided total security for the [[colony]] of New Zealand, but in [[1846 in New Zealand|1846]] the settlers bought a [[Early naval vessels of New Zealand#First gunboat|gunboat]]. The [[Early naval vessels of New Zealand#Waikato Flotilla|Waikato Flotilla]] operated from [[1860 in New Zealand|1860]], and at the same time a Naval Artillery Volunteer corps was established to provide harbour defence. In [[1884 in New Zealand|1884]] the government purchased four [[Early naval vessels of New Zealand#Spar torpedo boats|spar torpedo boats]], and starting in [[1887 in New Zealand|1887]] it funded ships of the [[Early naval vessels of New Zealand#Subsidies to the Royal Navy|Australasian Auxiliary Squadron]].

Before establishment of the navy, the people of New Zealand [[Early naval vessels of New Zealand#Gift of battlecruiser|paid for]] the building of the battlecruiser [[HMS New Zealand (1911)|HMS ''New Zealand'']], which was at the [[Battle of Jutland]].

In [[1912 in New Zealand|1912]] the then New Zealand Minister of Defence, James Allen, argued in London for the creation of a New Zealand division of the Royal Navy. In 1919 Commodore, [[Alan Hotham]] was appointed commander-in-chief until 1921 when the New Zealand Naval Forces was renamed as the [[New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy]].
