English: Coat of arms of the House of Trencavel (before 1247). Blazon: Barry of six gules and argent charged of ravelles sable. A 'ravelle' is a heraldic representation of a fingerling, used to create canting arms for Trencavel; for liguistic comparison reference the crevalle jack, Caranx hippos (also known as the black-tailed trevally, black cavalli, jack crevale, yellow cavalli, etc. In the 13th century, the term 'ravelle' referred to a number of fingerling fish of various sardine-like species.)
Français : Armoiries de la Maison de Trencavel (avant 1247). Blasonnement : fascé de gueules et d'argent, l'argent chargé de ravelles de sable. Un 'ravelle' est une représentation héraldique du poisson juvenile ou alevin. Il s'agit d'armes parlantes fondées sur le jeu de mot occitan « Trenca ravel », (tranche ravelle), les fasces du blason tranchant les ravelles – ici des alevins de Carangue crevalle ou alevins similaires. |
