Summary

Description The 41-hectare Burwood Rise estate, situated between Livingstone and Stanley Roads and around Dalroy Crescent & Consort Avenue, was created between 1968-1971 and formed the suburb's first major housing project. The development benefitted the owners of the nearby Forest Hill Shopping Centre – which was operated by an affiliate company of the estate's developer. The scheme began in 1967 when Bill Gelfand, co-owner of realestate agency Michelson Gelfand P/L, wondered about the possibilities of the land east of Springvale Road. Gelfand advised business partner and friend Paul Fayman – who's company Vista Developments P/L, a subsidiary of Masaga Investgments, bought the land. The initial purchase of more than 80 acres cost $640,000 and the five farmers who owned the land were paid $8,000 an acre, which was about twice the ruling price of rural land in the area. Planning began in 1967 and the first subdivision was approved in early 1968. By late 1971, over 270 lots had been sold across five stages.
