| Description |
English: Chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum antibiotic approved by the FDA in 1949, was soon shown to cause rare but fatal blood disorders. Because of its usefulness it remained on the market with labeling advising users of its risks. In 1961, the FDA ordered the first “black box” warning for the drug—the most serious precaution for health-care practitioners.
