DescriptionFarnsworth House (10227111514).jpg
The Farnsworth House (1945−51) — Modernist residence designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, located near Plano, Illinois.
Dr. Edith Farnsworth commissioned Mies to design a state-of-the-art house like the ones she read about in Europe. Situated above the Fox River, the house was instantly recognized as an architectural milestone with its all-glass exterior and modernist expression.
Mies and Farnsworth fought near the end stages of the project, so some aspects of the building were never installed. Farnsworth used the house as a summer retreat for the next 21 years.
The house was sold in 1972 to Lord Peter Palumbo, who would later purchase FLW's Kentuck Knob near Fallingwater.
By the way, if this is on your bucket list, call ahead. There's a hideous art installation in front right now, and you will want to make sure that it is gone before you visit.
