Description
English: Childe Hassam, American, 1859–1935

Newfields, New Hampshire, 1917 Watercolor over graphite on cream wove paper 25.2 x 35.2 cm. (9 15/16 x 13 7/8 in.) Gift of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters x1944-566

Hassam is best known for his vibrant paintings of New York City at the turn of the century. Executed later in his career, this sun-drenched landscape depicts the white-clapboard buildings of Newfields and the sparkling Squamscott River from the vantage point of Whitcomb Farm in Stratham, New Hampshire, where the artist spent several summers. Painted during World War I, this work displays the same varied palette and active brushwork as Hassam’s paintings of flag-draped Fifth Avenue.
