English: Portrait of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville (1742-1811)

Head to right; in chancellor's robes and wig; in right hand paper, left rests on his hip; on left, table with papers, &c.

Politician; youngest son of Robert Dundas, of Arniston, Lord President of the Court of Session; born in 1740; Solicitor-General for Scotland, 1773; M.P. for Co. and afterwards City of Edinburgh; Home Secretary, 1791; Secretary for War and Colonies, 1794; created Viscount Melville, 1802; First Lord of the Admiralty, 1804; impeached by the House of Commons for alleged malversation as Treasurer of the Navy, but on trial by his peers adjudged not guilty, 1805-6; monument in Edinburgh; died in 1811.
