The original station was opened in May 1885 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LT&SR) on its new direct route to Southend that avoided Tilbury. In June 1902 the District Railway (DR) extended its steam-hauled services from Whitechapel to Upminster along the LT&SR; however, when the District was electrified only so far as East Ham in September 1905 its services were cut back to that station until electrification was extended to Barking in April 1908.

DR plans to continue the electrification to Upminster were curtailed by WWI and were not revived until 1929 when the LT&SR’s successor, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMSR), decided to quadruple the tracks between Barking and Upminster with LT&S services using the new tracks and the District using the original LT&S tracks which would be electrified for DR services.

In addition, Hornchurch would be rebuilt and enlarged for the expected greater usage. The new station opened in September 1932. The station was designed by the LMS’s Chief Architect, William Henry Hamlyn and was his standard design (with slight variations) for the new stations provided between Barking and Upminster.

BR withdrew services from Hornchurch in June 1962, which saw the LT&S platforms being taken out of use though they could still be used in emergency. Despite the station then being used only by the District Line, it was not until January 1969 that ownership was transferred to London Transport.
