English: This inclined shaft, part of the Yarnbury mine operations to the north of Grassington, was sunk during 1828 to provide a haulage link to a level some 120 feet below ground. It was named after Captain John Barratt who was the Duke of Devonshire's mine agent at the time. Lead ore, mixed with other minerals, was dug out by hand in the Yarnbury mine and then pulled to the surface in rail-bound mining carts using horses. |
