Summary
DescriptionJames Cook Death Plaque Hawaii.jpg
English: James Cook Death Plaque Hawaii
There are two items: (1) the plaque; and (2) the photograph of the plaque. The plaque was originally created in 1928 and placed on the shoreline of Kealakekua Bay, near the spot where Captain Cook was slain in 1779. The plaque was placed in 1928 (source of year original placement: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/blog/2018/07/20/nr18-147/ ). The plaque has been replaced a couple of times, but the wording, apparently, has never changed. The plaque was placed, and is owned and maintained, by state of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources. Because the text of the plaque was written and published before 1930, and because it is owned and maintained by the Hawaiian state government, it is free-to-use (as of 2025).
The original photograph was taken in 2015, and the photographer has provided free-to-use license (below). This image is a slight enhancement of the original: rotated 1/2 degree & higher contrast.
