Legend of this picture (text removed with the border). Queen Kapiolani defying the Goddess of the vulcano. The natives of Hawaii held the goddess of the volcanic moutain of Pélé in the greatest dread. The Queen, when she became a Christian, saw that the superstition must be broken down. This she achieved by flaunting the authority of the goddess in the volcano itself, and in the presence of her terrified people. |
