English: Woodcut of Ku Klux Klansmen first printed in the September 9, 1871 edition of the National Republican and then reused in broadsides. The engraving replicates an 1870 photograph taken under the direction of deputy U.S. marshal J. G. Hester at Watson's Photograph Studio in Raleigh, who seized the disguises of arrested North Carolina Klansmen and had the photo taken as a demonstration of what the Klan reportedly did to a white Republican, John A. Campbell |
