| Description |
English: E. Gill was probably an English painter living in Rome. In 1725 the Swedish painter Martin van Meytens, later the most important portraitist in the court of Maria Theresa of Austria, painted two portraits of James Francis Edward Stuart and his wife Maria Clementina Sobieska. Between 1727 E. Gill was commissioned to produce two copies of this portraits and later he produced sixteen more copies, until March 1728, when his work was considered not good enough. This version of Maria Clementina's portrait is actually quite good, so maybe it could be from the atelier of van Meytens and not from E. Gill. It's the official portrait of the Queen, used for the mosaic portrait of her tomb too. |
