Mary Thoroton was the daughter of Colonel Thomas Thoroton of Screveton Hall, Nottinghamshire and his wife Mary Levett. On 3 April 1778, Mary married her cousin, Charles Manners Sutton (1755-1828), a grandson of John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland, KG, PC (1696-1779), to whom Mary's father had long acted as an adviser. Charles held the office of Bishop of Norwich in 1792 and served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1805-1828. He and Mary had two sons and ten daughters. Their eldest son, Charles, 1st Viscount Canterbury, GCB, PC (1780-1845), served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1817-1835.
