Summary

Description
English: McGuinness campaign car, 1917 South Longford by-election. Joseph McGuinness was in prison at this time in Lewes, Sussex, England, for his part in the 1916 Rising. Centre of the picture (with white trim around her hat) is his wife (née Katherine Farrell) and three nieces, (Brigid and Maureen McGuinness and Brigid Lyons). Commentators have remarked on the importance of the motor car in this campaign. The result saw McGuinness elected to Westminster, the second member of Sinn Féin to be elected that year. In keeping with his party's policy he never took his seat in London. Photograph was taken from the junction of Main Street and Dublin Street, Longford, facing north, along Main Street.
