Title
Medieval Floor Tiles - Lion and Flower
Description

Shaftesbury Abbey’s floor tiles are made using clay in two colours, terracotta and cream. Most are about 15cms square, though there are variations including smaller squares, and rectangular and triangular tiles.

Most of the red tiles are inlaid with a white slip (liquid clay) and depict a wide range of subjects – plants, animals, heraldic shields and abstract patterns. Although originally glazed and shiny, most of the glaze has been worn away so the tiles lack their original brilliance.
