L'établissement est séparé de la mer (à l'horizon) par une vaste étendue boueuse innondée durant les marrée d'équinoxe.
English: Panorama of Obock in 1882. The sea is visible in the background. On the left, the first French settlement built on the French territory. On the right, the tent of French trader M. P. Arnoux, who was assassinated the same year. Photograph by Georges Revoil.
The new settlement was separated from the sea (background) by a hundred yard of alluvial mud.
