English: As the debates over Prohibition grew more bitter, Congressmen Fiorello La Guardia and William Sirovich employed every means at their disposal, including a foul-smelling additive to industrial alcohol. Opponents of legalizing liquor charged that the proposal to replace a truly toxic chemical with a merely unpleasant one was tantamount to giving bootleggers a supply of safe alcohol with which to brew their wares. Ultimately, Prohibition was repealed in 1933. |
