Ausgebaut wurde das Fahrzeug von Ausbauer Ferrara.


Ursprünglich wurden diese Einheiten dazu geschaffen, bei einem Brand vermisste Feuerwehrleute wieder zu finden und aus dem Gefahrenbereich zu retten. Im Laufe der Jahre entwickelten sich die Rescue Companies außerdem zu hoch spezialisierten Einheiten sowohl für die technische Hilfeleistung und Gefahrguteinsätze, als auch für die Höhen- und Wasserrettung.

Die Rescues selbst werden oft scherzhaft als "toolboxes on wheels" bezeichnet (engl.; etwa: "Werkzeugkästen auf Rädern") und sind in etwa mit dem deutschen Rüstwagen vergleichbar, jedoch um einiges größer. Aufgrund ihres hohen Ausbildungsstandards gelten die Rescue Companies im FDNY als Elite, und Posten dort sind sehr begehrt. Rescues sind immer mit 1/5 besetzt.
