Object history The work was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1886 and the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Rallis painted the work in situ during a trip to Mount Athos. The Salon version was completed in the artist's Paris studio because there are differences between the two paintings, namely the architecture and the arrangement of the figures. Around the same period, he completed a painting entitled The Captive (Turkish Plunder) featuring similar style religious paintings on the walls.
Notes The work of art was sold at auction in 2007 in London, England, to a collector from Normandy, France, for 126,500 GBP.
