Continental Congressmen Robert Morris and Gouverneur Morris (no relation). This double portrait, commissioned by Robert Morris, honors his collaboration with Gouverneur Morris in establishing financial security for the new nation. As Superintendent of Finance during the Revolutionary War, Robert Morris restored the national credit with his personal fortune and helped to found the Bank of North America. In later years, financial problems led to his imprisonment for bankruptcy. Gouverneur Morris, a lawyer, went on to serve as Minister to France, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
