Notes Previously identified as Thomas Wenworth, the model of this portrait is more likely to be William Howard, depicted in a print by H. Robinson (1833), with the inscription "William Howard viscount Stafford, from the original of Van Dyck in the collection of Marquis of Bute". According to Horace Walpole, the model portrayed in the print compares very favourably with the model of the São Paulo painting. Oliver Millar, on the other hand, believes the model to be Edward Coke.
