English: On September 27, 1956, Captain Milburn G. "Mel" Apt piloted the Bell X-2 research aircraft and set a speed record of 2,094 mph (3,370 km/h), the first human to fly faster than Mach 3. After setting the record, he lost control of the aircraft and crashed in the desert near Edwards Air Force Base. He was unable to extricate himself from his escape capsule before it hit the desert floor. |
