Description
Deutsch: Als das Freibad aufkam. Zeichnung von Heinrich Zille (1858–1929). Originalunterschrift: "Mutta, da sollen Aale in's Wasser sein?" — "Quatsch nich, Krause, halt die Hand druff!"
English: "As the outdoor public swimming pool appeared," an illustration by Heinrich Zille (1858–1929), humorously portrays an authentic waterfront scene, probably at Müggelsee, in early 20th-century Berlin. Original caption: 'Mother, they say there are eels in the water?' — 'Nonsense, Krause, put your hand on it!' This depiction, featuring both dressed and nude bathers, reflects the Freikörperkultur movement, which gained prominence from the 1900s. It emphasized the health benefits of nudity in light, air, and sun, offering an antidote to the unhealthy lifestyles associated with industrial urban living.
