In 1786, he was admitted as a [[sizar]] to study mathematics at [[Peterhouse, Cambridge]], where he graduated as [[senior wrangler]] and won the [[Smith's Prize]] in 1790.<ref name="ac">{{acad|id=BRG786B|name=Bridge, Bewick}}</ref><ref name="wwrb">{{citation|first=W. In October 1790, he was ordained a deacon at Ely, and became a priest in 1792; in the same year he became a [[Fellow]] at Peterhouse, during which he spent time as both as college moderator and as proctor.<ref name="ac"/> From 1806 until 1816, he was Professor of Mathematics at the [[East India Company College]], Haileybury.<ref name="ac"/> He wrote a number of mathematical texts:<ref name="wwrb"/> his ''Algebra'' achieved international circulation.<ref>{{citation|page=48|title=The evolution of American secondary school textbooks: rhetoric & literature, algebra, geometry, natural history (zoology), botany, natural philosophy (physics), chemistry, Latin and Greek, French, German & world history as taught in American Latin grammar school academies and early high schools|first=John Alfred|last=Nietz|publisher=C.
