The governor-general was appointed solely on the advice of the [[Cabinet of Mauritius]], serving [[At Her Majesty's pleasure|at the pleasure of the monarch]].

Prior to the [[Independence of Mauritius]] this position was known as [[Governor of British Mauritius|Governor of Mauritius]] since December 1810.
