As of 2003, the city had an estimated [[population]] of 22,126 and a [[population density|density]] of 1,052.12 persons per km<sup>2</sup>. The total area was 21.03&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>.

On April 1, 2005, Ishikawa, along with the city of [[Gushikawa, Okinawa|Gushikawa]], and the towns of [[Katsuren, Okinawa|Katsuren]] and [[Yonashiro, Okinawa|Yonashiro]] (both from [[Nakagami District, Okinawa|Nakagami District]]), was merged to create the city of [[Uruma, Okinawa|Uruma]].<ref>{{Cite web |last=うるま市 |title=ごあいさつ |url=https://www.city.uruma.lg.jp/mayor/318.html |access-date=2024-02-28 |website=うるま市 |language=ja}}</ref>
