== History ==
The Song dynasty [[Taoist]] sage [[Chen Tuan]] is often credited with its origin and development.<ref>{{cite book|author=Glenn D. The ''liuhebafa'' form ''zhu ji'' ({{lang-zh|c=築基|p=zhú jī|labels=no}}) was taught in the late 1930s in [[Shanghai]] and [[Nanjing]] by [[Wu Yihui]] (1887–1958).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id18.html |title=History: Origins, Nanjing, and Others |publisher=WaterSpirit-6x8 |access-date=2016-09-24}}</ref> It is said he had learned the art from three teachers: Yan Guoxing, Chen Guangdi (who learned the art from a monk, Da Yuan and a Taoist, Li Chan), and Chen Helu.<ref>{{cite book|author=Jess O'Brien|title=Nei Jia Quan: Internal Martial Arts|year=2007|publisher=Blue Snake Books|isbn=978-1-5839-4199-7}}</ref>

Many of Wu Yihui's students had martial arts backgrounds and modified the form to merge it with their own knowledge. This is one of several explanations for its similarities with other martial arts such as ''[[xingyiquan]]'', ''[[baguazhang]]'', [[tai chi]] and ''[[yiquan]]''.
