In 1990, in the first (and last) [[1990 East German general election|free election]] in the assembly's history, he was elected a member of the [[German Democratic Republic|East German]] [[People's Chamber|People's Chamber (''Volkskammer'')]], becoming the assembly's [[Presidium of the People's Chamber|vice president]].<ref name=BiographischeDatenbankenRH/>
