Although it is the [[List of oldest football competitions|second-oldest competition]] in association football history, after the English [[FA Cup]], the Scottish Cup trophy is the oldest in association football and is also the oldest national trophy in the world. It was first presented to [[Queen's Park F.C.|Queen's Park]], who won the [[1874 Scottish Cup final|final match]] of the inaugural tournament in March 1874.<ref name="SFA_TheCup" /> The current holders are [[Aberdeen F.C.|Aberdeen]], who won the tournament by defeating [[Celtic F.C.|Celtic]] on penalties in the [[2025 Scottish Cup final|2025 final]].

The competition is a [[single-elimination tournament|knock-out tournament]].<ref name="Rules" /> In each round of games, the teams are paired at random, with the first team drawn listed as the [[home (sports)|home team]]. Every game lasts 90 minutes plus any additional [[stoppage time]].<ref name="Rules" /> The winner of each game advances to the next round, whilst the loser is eliminated from the tournament. In prior seasons, if a game ended in a [[tie (draw)|draw]] before the fourth round, the fixture was replayed at the home ground of the other team at a later date, before the fourth round.<ref name=":0" /> If the [[replay (sports)|replay]] also ended in a draw, a [[penalty shoot-out (association football)|penalty shoot-out]] took place to decide the winner. The competition has a staggered entry system. For the [[2022–23 Scottish Cup|2022–23]] edition, the preliminary round is contested by 50 clubs. Eighteen [[Highland Football League|Highland League]] and sixteen [[Lowland Football League|Lowland League]] clubs begin in the first round. Ten [[Scottish League Two]] clubs enter the second round. Any club that is a full or associate member of the [[Scottish Football Association]] (SFA) is entitled to compete in the tournament.<ref name="Rules" /> Full members qualify automatically, which includes every team that plays in the [[Scottish Professional Football League]] (SPFL), [[Highland Football League|Highland League]], and [[Lowland Football League|Lowland League]]. Clubs which are not full members of the SFA may still qualify for the tournament by winning one of the six leagues at tier 6 in the [[Scottish football league system]] ([[East of Scotland Football League|East]], [[Midlands Football League|Midlands]], [[North Caledonian Football Association|North Caledonian]], [[North Region Junior Football League|North Region]], [[South of Scotland Football League|South]], [[West of Scotland Football League|West]]) or the [[East of Scotland Football League#Cup competitions|East, South and West of Scotland Cup-Winners Shield]].
