Gardom was elected to the [[Legislative Assembly]] of British Columbia in the constituency of [[Vancouver-Point Grey]] in the general elections of [[List of British Columbia general elections|1966]], [[List of British Columbia general elections|1969]], [[List of British Columbia general elections|1972]], [[List of British Columbia general elections|1975]], [[List of British Columbia general elections|1979]], and [[List of British Columbia general elections|1983]].&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;cpg&amp;quot; /&amp;gt; Originally a [[Liberal Party of British Columbia|Liberal]], he joined the [[Social Credit Party of British Columbia|Social Credit]] party in 1975 and was appointed to the cabinet of Premier [[Bill Bennett]] in 1975.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;VancouverSun20130619&amp;quot; /&amp;gt; He held numerous ministerial positions including [[Attorney General of British Columbia|Attorney General]], Minister of Intergovernmental Relations, and was the longest-serving Government House Leader.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;cpg&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In 1995, Gardom was appointed Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia by [[Governor General of Canada|Governor General]] [[Roméo LeBlanc]], on the advice of Prime Minister [[Jean Chrétien]]. He was the only non-[[Liberal Party of Canada|Liberal]] politician to be appointed as a Lieutenant Governor during Chrétien&amp;#039;s term (although Gardom started out his career with the Liberals). He served until 2001.
