The '''World Climate Programme''' (WCP) was established at the eighth World Meteorological Congress following the first [[World Climate Conference]] in 1979. Following the Second World Climate Conference of 1990, the eleventh World Meteorological Congress (1991) reorganized the programme and renamed the four components:<ref name="wmo-wcip"/><br />

*World Climate Applications and Services Programme (WCASP)<br />
*World Climate Impact Assessment and Response Strategies Programme (WCIRP)<br />

In 1993, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission became a co-sponsor of the programme.<br />
