This is a subtle, yet important shift. Professor Smith was NOT trained in the philosophy department. Rather, he was trained at the University of Chicago's Divinity School. This is evidenced by the title page of his dissertation, which I have added as a citation. Given this degree, one cannot reasonably state that Professor Smith was trained as a philosopher, despite later work in philosophy.
