It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes São Mamede, Sé e São Pedro and Santo Antão.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> The population in 2011 was 4,738,<ref name=ine>Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE), Census 2011 results according to the 2013 administrative division of Portugal</ref> in an area of 1.13 km2.<ref name=dgt>Áreas das freguesias, concelhos, distritos e país</ref>
