Abutilon × hybridum is a species name used for a wide variety of different types of flowering plants of uncertain origin in the genus Abutilon.<ref name="Spencer1995">Template:Cite book</ref><ref name="Cullen2011">Template:Cite book</ref><ref name="WinterrowdWoodyard2004">Template:Cite book</ref> Because of the uncertainty surrounding the name, they are often considered a cultivar group: Abutilon x Hybridum Group or Abutilon Hybridum Group. They are cultigens, not occurring in the wild.<ref name="SheatSchofield1995"/><ref name="Mabberley1997">Template:Cite book</ref> As with the larger genus Abutilon generally, they have been referred to by the common names Chinese lantern,<ref>Template:Cite book</ref><ref>Template:GRIN</ref> and parlour maple.

Description

No reliable source has settled the question of parentage for these plants, and they have been variously said to perhaps derive from the species Abutilon theophrasti,<ref name="Armitage2004"/> A. striatum,<ref name="SheatSchofield1995">Template:Cite book</ref> A. darwinii,<ref name="ErhardtGötz2009">Template:Cite book</ref> A. pictum,<ref name="ErhardtGötz2009"/> or any of the South American species.<ref name="Burke2005">Template:Cite book</ref>

Descriptions vary widely; some sources have described them as short as "1 to 2 ½' tall", while others list them as reaching 15' in height.<ref name="Armitage2004">Template:Cite book</ref><ref name="Tenenbaum">Template:Cite book</ref>
