Alper is a male Turkish given name. It is composed of the two words alp and er. In Turkish, "Alp" means "stouthearted", "brave", "chivalrous", "warrior".<ref>[1] Nişanyan Names "Alp"</ref> The second, er means "soldier, male".<ref>[2] Nişanyan Names "Er"</ref> Additionally Alper is used as an adjective for an ancient legendary Turkish commander; Alp Er Tunga who lived around 300 B.C.<ref name="auto">[3] Nişanyan Names "Alper"</ref><ref>[4] Nişanyan Names "Tunga"</ref> It's meant to be a good hearted one too.<ref name="auto"/>

Alper is also a Jewish surname, one of many variant names all derived from the city Heilbronn (see Heilprin).
