The population was 3,957 at the 2020 census,<ref name="2020 Census"/> down from 4,008 at the 2010 census.<ref name=2010CensusCA/> It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Geography
Bystrom is located at Template:Coord (37.619981, -120.979790)<ref name="GR1">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> in South Modesto, CA.

The 2020 United States census reported that Bystrom had a population of 3,957. The population density was Template:Convert. The racial makeup of Bystrom was 24.5% White, 0.8% African American, 2.6% Native American, 2.0% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 56.1% from other races, and 13.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 82.3% of the population.<ref name=DP1>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref>
The census reported that 99.2% of the population lived in households, 0.8% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized.<ref name=DP1/>
There were 1,119 households, out of which 45.0% included children under the age of 18, 42.9% were married-couple households, 8.7% were cohabiting couple households, 26.3% had a female householder with no partner present, and 22.2% had a male householder with no partner present. 20.0% of households were one person, and 6.0% were one person aged 65 or older. The racial makeup of Bystrom was 2,006 (50.0%) White, 79 (2.0%) African American, 62 (1.5%) Native American, 91 (2.3%) Asian, 18 (0.4%) Pacific Islander, 1,580 (39.4%) from other races, and 172 (4.3%) from two or more races.
