S-Bahn is the name given to urban railway systems in Germany. The term was first used on the Berlin S-Bahn station Halensee in 1932, by a railway employee who shortened the word Schnellbahn, the name then given to the urban electric train services in Berlin to S-Bahn. S-Bahn soon became the by-word for fast efficient electric trains.
