Summary
DescriptionHeliozoan feeding DSC 1665.webm
Freshwater heliozoan feeding on small flagellated algae (probably Ochromonas spp.). The heliozoan traps prey with its long axopods that project from the cell. Entrapped cells are then pulled towards the center to be fully engulfed. The plate-like scales that surround the cell body have to be temporarily moved out of the way in the process. Numerous engulfed prey (green particles) are visible in the cell body.
