Igbo is spoken by upwards of 25 million people, primarily in the west African nation of Nigeria, where it is a lingua franca alongside English, Hausa, and Yoruba, as well as in Equatorial Guinea, where it enjoys a degree of official status as a recognized minority language. A literary language since the late eighteenth century, Igbo is written using a form of the Latin Alphabet known as Önwu.
